We get it, weekday mornings are busy. It can be difficult to get yourself—and any younger members of your household—out the door on time, let alone to ensure everyone has had what’s long been called “the most important meal of the day.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 15% of U.S. adults skip breakfast on any given day. But research has shown that eating a nutrient-rich breakfast is indeed beneficial; the meal is linked to improved heart health, reduced diabetes risk, and better alertness and focus, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
However, the weekends are a different story. “Brunch culture” has come up as a new American phenomenon, growing in leaps and bounds since it was first introduced in the 1930s with the trend exploding in the 2010s. Usually, it’s a meal consumed outside of the home, making Saturday a huge day for restaurants nationwide. Spending on food and beverages used to peak on Fridays at lunchtime, according to a report from Square, but now it’s peaking from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, prime bunch time. For reference, in 2019, that morning window on Saturdays contributed to 8.5% of weekly spend; in 2023, it was 10.1%.
